At Barkisland School our Year 4 children participate in a weekly Swimming Lesson, this takes place at Sowerby Bridge swimming pool. They are provided private transporation there and back via a private bus.

These swimming lessons form part of the National Curriculum for PE in Key Stage 2. Throughout these lessons children are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively, including front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Throughout Year 4 children will be assessed against the National Curriculum objectives. As in all areas of the curriculum children development at different rates, if children do not acheive the pass rate they have the opportunity to take part again when they are in Year 5 or Year 6 alongside the current Year 4 cohort. 

Swimming Data Year 6 – 2022-23

90% of pupils can swim confidently, competently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m.
