Physical Education

Vision

Physical Education at Barkisland promotes our school vision of ‘we believe, we succeed, we nurture’ as children are exposed to these everyday in lessons. Our school aims to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who believe in themselves and strive for their personal best. We listen to our children wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children's well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need.

New curriculum

Get Set 4 PE is a new scheme that we purchased in Spring term 2022. The scheme has been in place for a full school year and I have received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from staff and children. When speaking to staff and conducting staff evaluations, the comments stated that ‘it is so easy to use’, ‘they love the progression of each unit’ and ‘the assessment tool is super quick to complete’. When speaking to children and conducting pupil questionnaires, all pupils said that they enjoy PE lessons and the comments were  the following: ‘I love PE because we learn new skills’ and ‘it is so fun, I love the games we play’. I completed a equipment audit to ensure we had the correct equipment to ensure PE lessons were being taught correctly. I purchased a variety of equipment funded by the Sports Premium budget, it has been great to the positive impact this has had on teachers and children.

Our Get Set 4 PE curriculum has been written with careful consideration of the aims of the National Curriculum, our school vision ‘we believe, we nurture, we succeed’,  to ensure that children are given a wealth of opportunities to develop their physical skills as well as developing the whole child.

Each lesson plan has progressive activities that are designed to inspire and engage pupils, allowing them to explore and develop skills and embed knowledge. Furthermore, lessons are aimed to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience, develop critical thinkers, be successful and be challenged. The lessons are accompanied by supporting resources including resource cards, skills videos and music. Teaching points appear throughout to help teachers with their subject knowledge and differentiation tasks provide activities with simple changes to appropriately challenge all  pupils.

Daily Mile

All children (and classroom staff) take part in our Daily Mile! We use our bespoke running track encouraging children to get active for 10 minutes a day! This keeps our children's minds and bodies fit and healthy!

Active Calderdale

We have joined the Calderdale Active Schools programme. Calderdale’s Active Schools (CAS) programme, which sees schools implement opportunities to be active throughout the school day and beyond, launched 12 months ago with 24 Trailblazer schools including 2 secondary schools. All teaching staff have had training on how the programme is run. An action plan has been created for our school by the Active Calderdale team for each half term so that children are being active in different ways throughout the day. Our first target is to introduce ‘Healthy Selfie’ in school. In school there is a ‘Healthy Selfie’ display where we would like children and families to send photos of themselves being active/healthy. This could be walking, running to places, eating healthy food, joining in clubs outside of school etc. You can upload your photos to our school X platform (Twitter), tag us @BarkiSchool and use the hashtag #ActiveCalderdale, #HealthySelfie or you can email them to the school email address which is:admin@barkisland.calderdale.sch.uk We will then print the pictures out and put them on our wonderful display for all children and staff to see!
