Barkisland CE VA Primary School was first set up in 1657, following the will of Sarah Gledhill which stated:
‘…to give and bequeath the sum of two hundred pounds current English money unto the use of a school master, for teaching such poor children of the township of Barkisland, whose parents are, or shall not be able, to bring them up in learning…’
Over three hundred years later, we are still committed to provide excellent educational opportunities for the children in our community. This is driven by our vision – we believe, we nurture, we succeed.
Belief is the key to unlock a multitude of opportunities. At Barkisland CE VA Primary School, we empower our community to believe in themselves and others through Christian teaching and values. Throughout our curriculum, we provide opportunities for children to realise their potential and approach challenges and setbacks with increasing resilience to equip them to be effective world citizens of the 21st century.
Just as God fed his flock, we will feed our Barkisland family with the knowledge, understanding, skills and resilience in which to succeed throughout their journey with us and beyond. As a whole school community, we will hold our children close to our hearts enshrined in love, whilst nurturing them in a truly inclusive environment.
Just as God called those who worship to prosper, see opportunity and be glorious, at Barkisland CE VA Primary School, we actively praise and nurture our children to have the inner belief to succeed. We strive to inspire everyone to dare to dream to reach all that they desire. Success is celebrated at all levels: children, staff, families and the community. We encourage for our school to be a community and to not only succeed for themselves, but for the greater good of others.
We continue to ‘bring them up in learning’.
Our Core Christian Values support the school's vision.
We decided on sheep characters to help display our values, as they represent that we are all part of God's flock and the community in which we serve. The values help us in our daily life and shape the way in which we feel, think and respond to those around us.
Children and staff can be nominated to earn one of our core values badges. These are awarded every half term during our Merit assembly time.
You may have noticed that they spell out our school name!
